    Natural stilbenes have been a hot research topic due to their intricate structures and diverse biological activities. Although their molecular backbone consists only of 1,2-diphenylethylene units, stilbenes show an enormous diversity with regard to the different units present, the degree of polymerisation, and the pattern of oligomer construction. From January 1995 to the end of 2008, more than 400 new naturally occurring stilbenes were isolated and identified, and this review focuses on their structural diversity, distribution, and bioactivity.

    Two new hydroxystilbenoids named vitisin C and viniferal were isolated from Vitis vinifera 'Kyohou' and the structures were characterized on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence. Furthermore, the absolute configurations of (-)-vitisin B and (-)-cis- vitisin B as well as (+)-vitisin C and (-)-viniferal were determined by the synthetic evidence from (+)-[var epsilon]-viniferin.

    A new hydroxystilbene tetramer named isohopeaphenol was isolated from the cork of Vitis vinifera 'Kyohou' and its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.

    Three new oligostilbenes having a benzofuran moiety, viniferifuran, (+)-vitisifuran A and (-)-vitisifuran B, were isolated from Vitis vinifera 'Kyohou'. The structures of these oligostilbenes including the absolute configuration were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Furthermore, these were chemically transformed from (+)-epsilon-viniferin, (+)- vitisin A and (-)-vitisin B, respectively, whose absolute configurations are known.

    Two new stilbene dimer glucosides, resveratrol (E)-dehydrodimer 11-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (1) and resveratrol (E)-dehydrodimer 11'-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (2), were isolated together with the known resveratrol (E)-dehydrodimer (3) and pallidol (4) from Vitis vinifera cell cultures. The structures and stereochemistry of the new compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 are dimers that belong to a new type of oligostilbene formed from a resveratrol unit and a resveratrol glucoside unit. Compounds 1 and 3 exhibited nonspecific inhibitory activity against cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, with IC(50) values in the range of 5 microM, whereas compound 4 was approximately 10-fold less active.
