Research Fields
The Faculty of Biology has regularly held one of
the top three places in all national rankings. At the same time,
as measured by its raising of outside funding as well as its participation
in various excellence applications and major research projects,
it is the strongest research faculty at Albert-Ludwig University.
The Faculty of Biology has emphatically committed
itself to maintaining the rich organismic variety of research objects
and multiplicity of levels of consideration and complexity of the
biosciences (molecule, cell, organism, ecosystem, evolution) which
now represent a prominent characteristic of the Faculty. At present
in the Faculty there are major projects and research consortia in
the fields of Immunobiology, Neurobiology, Developmental Biology
and Molecular Plant Sciences.
Currently the Faculty is developing research programs
in "Systems Biology" and "Translational
Biology" as interdisciplinary approaches. Systems
Biology involves a total view of biological systems at all levels
of organization. It extends from the modelling of individual reaction
pathways to a comprehensive understanding of complex ecosystems
and the interaction between organisms and the environment, as well
as exploring the human brain. Translational Biology (the transfer
of knowledge gained from basic research to application oriented
research) is a major activity in the research direction of our Faculty
and facilitates cooperation with industrial partners.
