Bachelor of Science in Biology

The academic degree "Bachelor of Science" (B.Sc.) awarded upon successful completion of the respective course of study represents the first career qualification degree and opens, along with actually beginning a career, the possibility of further scientific qualification in a Master’s study program, The Biology Faculty will introduce a program for the Master’s at the latest in Winter semester 2011/2012, when the first graduates of the Bachelor’s program emerge.

Structure of the B.Sc. study program in Biology

The study of Biology in Freiburg offers a solid biological-scientific education with a thematically very broad course offering and attractive possibilities to develop a specialty.

General biological introductory knowledge over the whole spectrum of Biology is offered in mandatory modules or subjects of the Biology core curriculum in the first through fourth semesters.

Biology mandatory courses/subjects:

  •   Cell Biology & Evolutionary Bases of Life
  •   Introduction to Genetics & Molecular Biology
  •   Introduction to Botany
  •   Introduction to Zoology
  •   Physiology
  •   Scientific Theory & Ethics
  •   Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunobiology
  •   Developmental Biology
  •   Ecology

The chemical, physical and mathematical fundamentals, which are indispensable for the study and the scientific practice of Biology, are offered in the Natural Sciences core curriculum courses in the first year of study. These courses are mandatory for all students in the Bachelor’s study program.

Natural sciences core curriculum courses:

  •   Introductory & Inorganic Chemistry
  •   Physics I
  •   Mathematics I
  •   Organic Chemistry
  •   Physics II
  •   Mathematics II
  •   Physical Chemistry

For an interdisciplinary orientation there is a selection of profile courses from the teaching offerings of other faculties, e.g., Humanities, Geo-Sciences, Forest- and Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Economic Sciences, Physics or Psychology, as elective required courses. Additional profile courses from the offering in Biology, e.g. special methods courses, round out the possibility of forming one’s own profile. Additional career-orientated key qualifications are offered both in the Biology Faculty’s own courses as well as in offerings of the Centre for Key Qualifications (ZfS) and are components of the mandatory core program.

The third year of study serves for orientation and specialization as well as for setting a main focus in one biological specialty as preparation for the Bachelor’s thesis. For this purpose, in the fifth semester, 3 courses are selected from a total of 17 advanced subjects, which reflect the whole breadth of the research landscape of the Freiburg Biology Faculty. Here it is mandatory that a major subject is selected from the field in which later the Bachelor’s thesis is to be completed.

Advanced major subjects offered:

  •   Behavioural and Sensory Physiology
  •   Biochemistry - Synthetic Biology & Proteomics
  •   Cell Biology
  •   Developmental Biology
  •   Evolutionary Ecology
  •   Functional Morphology, Biomechanics and Bionics
  •   Genetics
  •   Immunology
  •   Limnology
  •   Microbiology
  •   Neurobiology
  •   Neurogenetics
  •   Geobotany
  •   Molecular Plant Physiology
  •   Plant Biotechnology

In the sixth semester, in preparation for doing the Bachelor’s thesis, a project course is offered in which the student learns in the laboratory or in field work the practical skills which will be needed for the completion of the Bachelor’s thesis. To be completed over a period of three months in one of the advanced major subjects, the Bachelor’s thesis and the following final colloquium culminate the course of study after 3 years.

The teaching curriculum consists of lectures, laboratory practicals, excursions, exercises and seminars, which are combined to make up the individual courses. The study contents of each course are evaluated during actual study. Each course is assigned credit points (CP) according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Upon successful completion of a course the student can apply for these credits, making it easier to get universal recognition for courses taken at an institution of higher education anywhere in Europe.

Applying for the Bachelor’s study program

The admission procedure for the 130 study places in each year’s Bachelor’s program in Biology beginning in the Winter semester is carried out in the framework of an internal university acceptance procedure. The selection process and the criteria for admission to the Bachelor’s program are expected to be announced in May. Besides scholarly achievements other achievements which can provide valuable information about a candidate’s suitability for the desired study program are taken into consideration, for example, relevant career training or career work experience in this area, practical activities or extracurricular achievements.
Application forms are available now: forms, information, deadlines – everything you need to know to fill out your application and to » make a sucessful application.
